Kotte - Angampitiya Road

Crossing the Kotte road across from Rampart Road, will lead  you to Angampitiya Road. At the end of this road you will find a few remains of the western defenses of the city. The ramparts have become convenient boundary walls for the lucky residents, the wall designed and built by none other than Nissanka Alagakkonara.( Who else can boast of having a boundary wall dating back over 500 years in their back yards)

A little beyond this is sighted the flat grounds that were used during the period for sport activities. Games of war practiced by the warriors, known as ‘Angam’ (or 'Angam Pora') has been popular at this venue. 'Ange' means body, 'Pora' signifies combat. These were fighting skills honed for combat, with or without weapons. Wrestling was also developed as a distinct science, and was known as 'Malla Pora'.  A pit measuring 25 feet by 3 feet deep termed the 'Aka Vala', filled with extracts of termite mounds mixed with sesame oil to render it soft and antiseptic has been used for combat.
