Top amongst our list is the illustrious J P De Fonseka, eminent author, lay OMI and a Papal Chamberlain, J P has been a literary giant and a legend among the writers of his day. The following tributes and essays have been taken from family documents and the book 'Select Essays and Verses of J P De Fonseka ' compiled and published by Leonard Obris, of Waikkal (1989).

Professor Earle de Fonseka
Professor Earle de Fonseka was a case of exemplary talent in two fields - Music and Medicine. He qualified his M.B.B.S in 1948 and was appointed professor in 1968. He was also the Dean of the Medical Faculty from 1968 to 1988. In the field of western music, he was widely recognised, and received the honour of Kala Keerthi in 1988. He died in February 2000 and left his property to a foundation for the advancement of music.

Dr Patrick John de Fonseka
Dr
Patrick John de Fonseka contributed immensely to the treatment and containment
of Leprosy in the 60's, when Leprosy sufferers were ostracised by society. He
worked hard to remove the stigma attached to the disease. Dr Patrick died on
20th June 1999

Captain Janaka Francis Sean De Fonseka RSP
Over 300 years after Don Michael De Fonseka took part in the siege and capture
of the Portuguese occupied Jaffna Fort, another family member saw active duty in
the present war in the north, this time with the elite commando regiment of the
Sri Lanka Army.
